UV Safety Awareness

Although spending time outside is a great way to be physically active, reduce stress, and get a natural dose of Vitamin D, it is also important to practice safety from UV Rays. UV Rays are an invisible type of radiation that emits from the sun that can damage your skin cells. Follow our tips below to help keep you safe this Summer!

Check the UV Index

The US National Weather Service and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a UV Index to help give you an idea how strong UV lights are in your area(s) on any given day.

The higher the number, the greater the risk of exposure to UV cancer. Utilize the EPA’s website to help determine the UV Index forecast in your area at www.epa.gov/sunsafety/uv-index-1.

Wear Light Clothing or Sunscreen

Wearing light clothing that covers your skin or protecting your skin with SPF 15 or higher before going outside. Remember that sunscreen wears off so remember to reapply when staying outside for longer periods of the day especially after swimming, sweating, or toweling off.

Wear Sunglasses and/or Hats

Wearing sunglasses and hats can help protect your eyes from UV rays to help reduce the risk of cataracts. Sunglasses that have both UVA and UVB ray blockers offer the best protection. Make sure to wear a hat that helps shade your whole face, including your eyes and ears.
