Basic Educational Requirements
To be eligible for a nursing license in New York, you must graduate from a nursing education program that meets one of the following criteria:
- A New York State Education Department (NYSED)-registered nursing program resulting in a diploma, associate degree, bachelor’s degree, or master’s degree.
- A nursing program in another U.S. state or territory recognized by its licensing authority.
- A general nursing education program in a country outside the U.S. that is accepted by NYSED.
Moral Requirements
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- You must demonstrate good moral character.
Additional Required Coursework
Before applying for your RN license, you must complete the following courses:
- Child Abuse Reporting Coursework: If you graduated from an accredited program after September 1, 1990, you likely completed this requirement. If not, you must take an NYSED-approved child abuse reporting course.
- Infection Control Coursework: All applicants must complete NYSED-approved infection control training. If you completed this training during your nursing education, ensure it meets NYSED requirements.
Pass the NCLEX Exam
You must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN), which assesses your readiness to practice as a registered nurse.

Once you have met all educational and examination requirements, apply for your RN license by completing the application process with NYSED.
- Fill out the online application form.

Your nursing license is valid for life unless it is surrendered or revoked. However, you must renew your registration certificate every three years to continue practicing.

All registered nurses in New York must complete NYSED-approved infection control training every four years. Ensure you meet this requirement to maintain your active status.
