UV Safety Awareness

Although spending time outside is a great way to be physically active, reduce stress, and get a natural dose of Vitamin D, it is also important to practice safety from UV Rays. UV Rays are an invisible type of radiation that emits from the sun that can damage your skin cells. Follow our tips below to help keep you safe this Summer!

Check the UV Index

The US National Weather Service and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a UV Index to help give you an idea how strong UV lights are in your area(s) on any given day.

The higher the number, the greater the risk of exposure to UV cancer. Utilize the EPA’s website to help determine the UV Index forecast in your area at www.epa.gov/sunsafety/uv-index-1.

Wear Light Clothing or Sunscreen

Wearing light clothing that covers your skin or protecting your skin with SPF 15 or higher before going outside. Remember that sunscreen wears off so remember to reapply when staying outside for longer periods of the day especially after swimming, sweating, or toweling off.

Wear Sunglasses and/or Hats

Wearing sunglasses and hats can help protect your eyes from UV rays to help reduce the risk of cataracts. Sunglasses that have both UVA and UVB ray blockers offer the best protection. Make sure to wear a hat that helps shade your whole face, including your eyes and ears.

Be Safe this Summer!

We hope you are enjoying your Summer and staying safe and well. Please check on the elderly in your community to make sure they are keeping cool. Looking to book your next trip? Don’t forget to check out our great travel discounts through Tickets at Work!

How to Keep Healthy at the Airport

As travel nurses, going from one airport to the next depending how many travel connections you need to make to get to your final destinations can be draining. We are here to offer some ways to help you keep healthy while at the airport, especially when you arrive there two hours ahead of your departure.

Take the Stairs/ Avoid Moving Walkways

Utilize your free time, while waiting for your flight by getting your steps in. Skip the escalators and go for the stairs and skip the moving walkways and earn more steps the long way. This will also help keep your muscles moving and heart flowing, which is great if you’re about to board a long flight.

Eat Healthy

Pack healthy snacks prior to getting to the airport to avoid reaching for fast food. If you do choose to grab food at the airport, look for healthier options by finding shops with healthier snacks or cafes that offer salads and wraps.

Avoid “Stress Eating” or “Bored Eating”

Waiting for flights can be stressful and sometimes boring when you are traveling alone. Avoid eating just because you’re bored or feeling stressed and instead make sure you stay hydrated and fill yourself up with water instead.

Limit Alcohol Intake

There is nothing wrong with celebrating your new adventure. Just be smart about limiting your intake before a flight. This will help you avoid unwanted calories and keep you coherent throughout your flight. If you must grab a drink stick to a glass of red wine or choose a hard seltzer, that offers less sugar and calories.

Visit a Spa

Plenty of airports across the US now have spas available. Utilize your free time by treating yourself to a massage because self-care is very important, especially if you’re nervous about starting a new travel assignment.

Have a Safe Flight!

Wherever your next travel nursing assignment takes you, we hope you stay safe and well. Remember to always wash your hands often and carry sanitizing wipes to wipe down seats, arm rests, and table trays to keep you safe from germs.

How to Overcome the Obstacles of Travel Nursing

Travel nursing can be both exciting and overwhelming but once you get yourself out there and experience your first travel nursing assignment it will be hard to ever go back. Our White Glove team is here to help our new travel nurses overcome the obstacles that our travel nurses face because we like to be there for our nurses every step of the way.

  • Missing Loved Ones – The biggest obstacle most travel nurses are missing their family and friends. The good news is that you can choose the length of contracts you want to take. At White Glove we offer our nurses flexibility from choosing 8 to 13-week contracts. It also helps that the world is technologically advanced, so family and friends are only one video chat away, which helps you re-connect with family.

  • Meeting New Friends- Being the new person can be challenging but that is why we always encourage our travel nurses to join travel nursing groups to help them get through their assignments. Facebook has groups like The Gypsy Nurse, where you can find other nurses that have contracts where you are headed so you can meet up and connect with them.

  • Working with New People- You are going to meet new people wherever you go and although they may do things differently at each assignment you take, you can easily overcome this challenge by observing and listening to what your new colleagues have to say. Pay attention to the culture and learn how to adapt to your surroundings by keeping an open mind and friendly attitude.

  • Finding the Right Recruiter – With plenty of agencies and recruiters out there it is always hard to decide where you want to go. Make sure to do your research and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Always know that our White Glove team is here for you and are always ready to answer all your questions because we want to make sure to match you with the nursing assignment that is right for you!
