Maximize Your Vacation Benefits: Avoiding Post-Trip Burnout

A vacation feels like a magic wand when we are exhausted from our harried healthcare schedules. The thought of unwinding on a serene beach or exploring the wonders of nature can instantly lift our spirits. However, have you ever found yourself needing a vacation from vacation? As weird as it sounds, post-vacation burnout is a real struggle. We’ll dive into the causes of post-vacation burnout and a couple of simple techniques that can ensure that our well-deserved time off leaves us feeling truly rejuvenated.

Why Do You Feel Burned Out After a Vacation?

Over the Top Expectations

It’s easy to imagine that a vacation will completely erase all your stress and fatigue. However, returning to a pile of work and responsibilities can quickly burst that bubble of relaxation.

Change in Routine

Changes in sleep patterns, diet, and exercise during a vacation can leave you feeling disoriented and tired when it’s time to go back to your regular schedule.

That Travel Stress

The stress of long flights, layovers, time zone changes, and the general logistics of traveling to new places can take a toll on your energy levels.

Jammed Schedules

Planning an overly busy vacation schedule can leave little time for rest and relaxation, contributing to burnout.

Psychological Adjustment

The abrupt shift from a leisurely vacation mindset to the structured routine of everyday life can be mentally taxing, leading to overwhelm and stress.

How Can You Solve Post-Vacation Burnout?

Give yourself time

Return home a day or two before you need to go back to work. Use this time to rest, unpack, and readjust to your home environment, alleviating the immediate pressure of your job and other responsibilities.

Allow slow transition

Gradually reintroduce your regular schedule, starting with your morning routine or meal times. This can make the transition back to everyday life less jarring and help you feel more in control.

Stay connected with your vacation buddies

Chat with friends and family to lift your spirits and ease the transition back to daily life. You’ll also like to seek support from friends who just landed from that vacation bubble too, so you are genuinely understood.

Ditch perfectionism

Start with the most critical tasks first when you return to work. Focus on one thing at a time to reduce stress and avoid becoming overwhelmed.

Find a fall adventure suited for you

To find pleasure in your day-to-day life, you need a fulfilling and supportive job. With opportunities unique to the person you are, the White Glove job board is the ideal place to find your perfect match that will keep you inspired all year round!

Make your home a place you love more

Declutter, add plants, a pleasant diffuser, or play soothing music to help reduce stress and make it easier to readjust to being home.

Incorporate Relaxation Techniques

Include yoga, meditation, or gentle exercise into your routine to extend the benefits of your vacation. Deep breathing or stretching can help you stay calm and relaxed.

Reward yourself for reaching small goals

Accomplishing small tasks during your first few days back can bring a sense of progress and boost your mood. Make it even more effective by incentivizing yourself with a fun activity or favorite foods after completing a small goal.

Revel in your memories

Reflect on the positive experiences and memories from your vacation by looking at photos, sharing stories with friends, or writing about your trip to maintain your sense of relaxation and joy.

Take care of your body

Your body may have been in overdrive over the past while. Drink plenty of water and eat healthy meals to restore energy levels and improve your well-being.

Seek Professional Help if Needed

Your mental health is important. If feelings of burnout persist, don’t hesitate to talk to a therapist or counselor for additional strategies and support as you return from vacation.

Why settle into a set routine when you can keep the excitement going?

Lydia advises attendees to prepare for the class to get the most out of the experience.

*Keep a bottle of water handy wherever you are planning to participate. Staying hydrated helps to maintain energy levels and prevent dehydration. Though don’t overdo it! Drowning yourself in too much water, more than you are typically used to, will slow you down.

*Use a Yoga Mat if you have one. The non-slip surface will make it easy to practice various poses. If you don’t have one, bring a rug or blanket. It will offer some extra cushioning and support during seated or lying poses.

*Wear comfortable, breathable clothes for easy movement. Stiff blouses or heavy jeans may limit you from fully engaging in certain exercises.

Great News! No need to RSVP!

No matter when you see this, we want you to join us! Here is the direct link to access the sessions! Save it and keep it handy.

Benefits of Back-to-School

While most of us know a healthcare schedule of a grueling 7-7 or 8-8, there are those nurses who work a tidy 8am to 3pm routine. These are not the only differences between nurses working in a hospital facility and the school setting. According to a recent independent survey conducted by the White Glove Placement Empowerment Department, over 50 school nurses were interviewed to gain insight into their experiences working in schools. The survey revealed overwhelmingly positive feedback, with many nurses expressing high levels of job satisfaction. The list of advantages of their work was extensive, while very few drawbacks were mentioned. Let’s go ahead and explore the insides of school nurse life!

A fresh back-to-school season

When the kids show up on the first day of school with their neatly tucked and starched shirts, their excitement for the new school year becomes infectious. After a summer filled with fun and excitement, it’s nice to take a break from spontaneity and embrace the structure of September. You don’t have to be a school nurse to feel the shift, but the school setting affects you uniquely.

Those Hours!

One of the most appealing aspects of school nursing is the predictable hours. Days typically start at 8am and end at 3pm or 4pm, depending on the school. This means school nurses can enjoy daylight even during the darkest winter days. The best part? These hours are consistent and reliable, providing a level of stability that’s rare in the healthcare industry.

We Stress Less

School nurses often report a better work-life balance than traditional nursing roles. School nurses consider themselves fortunate to work in a less stressful and more supportive environment while still having a positive impact on the lives of others.

Connection With Pupils

School nurses have the unique experience of consistently working with the same group of medically fragile students throughout the year. This continuity allows them to build strong bonds with the students, who often feel comfortable seeking physical care, emotional support, and guidance from the school nurse.

Flexibility

During your lunch hour as a school nurse, choosing when to take a break is up to you. Sure, you need to use responsible judgment to select a time when no emergencies are likely to occur, yet you are not micromanaged on when or how to take your lunch break.

Full Year Stability of Work

Once you sign a contract for a year as a school nurse, you can rest assured that your work schedule is stable for the next 10 months. There’s no need to worry about contract renewals or unit changes, providing a sense of security and stability that is often hard to find in other nursing roles.

Last but so not least! Off in the Summer

Definitely the winner of the bucket! School nurses look forward to the end of another school year, and they are excited to enjoy a well-deserved and restful summer break!

We thank all White Glove School Nurses for their input on what life a school nurse is all about!

See what they say

“Just love every aspect of the job. School nursing is collaborating with teachers, parents, doctors, and students. You use your common sense and communication to bring it all together. It is gratifying to know you are keeping fragile students safe.”

Mary Walker, RN

“When I started school nursing, I noticed how stressful my previous job at a rehabilitation has been. Building a relationship with the children is my favorite part, and it is so cute when they invite me to any events in the classroom. The short hours are also a huge benefit. Frankly, I was still considering whether to continue for the school year, but as I am pointing out the pros to you, I cannot see myself leaving such a great job.

Serin Ahmad, RN

“School Nursing is dynamic. More than helping pupils with their physical ailments, I feel like a loving aunt to the student. They feel comfortable walking into my office and discussing any concerns. Truly looking forward to the back-to-school freshness.”

Patricia Rogers, RN

You are still on the ball to make school nursing your next stop for the 2024-2025 school year. Sign up to become a school nursing with all those benefits to boot!
