#everytypeofnurse series 1: How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance as a nurse or allied professional?

We thank all nurses and allied professionals for their valuable responses to the initial question of our #everytypeofnurse series, aimed at capturing real-time perspectives on nurse life questions that apply to us regularly. This month’s question was an important one, so we emphasized hearing from you.

“How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance as a nurse or allied professional?”

We got some fantastic ideas from so many nurses! We tried to incorporate as many as possible. Here are responses and tips from one nurse to another: the people who really get it. Have fun connecting with peers and see what they have to say!

Self-care is important to maintain physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Make time for some exercise, eat healthy, keep some social connections, and limit social media and work and home boundaries  /Ihuoma Enemua

Go outside for a walk. /Mila Nzarova

Loving your work, regular visits to your doctor, and, of course, vacationing. Listen to your inner self, and pray. Stay healthy! /Cynthia Baylosis

Make sure you take time for yourself every day. I exercise every morning before work. I get up at 3:45 am to exercise and do the Peloton bike because it helps me feel energized and ready for my day. It’s quiet and relaxing for me before my workday begins at 7 am. /Marci Goldin

I garden and walk the dog. /Ann Maloney

I set aside time for self-care for myself. I like walking, reading a good book, making a yummy dinner, or buying a deliciously scented shampoo. /Suri Meirov

Set boundaries, specify work hours, and try to stick to them. Make time for self-care and activities that promote physical and mental health. /Dannie Alexander

Take good care of yourself. /Marguerite Tam

I leave work on time, try not to have any conversations about work, and detach. I regularly go to the gym, do yoga, and get a monthly massage. I love to dance. I take any opportunity or occasion to dance to do what I love. I like to garden; it is also very calming and therapeutic. I dig in the dirt and put all my frustration there. /Shelly Blackman

Sleeping well, resting, and meeting with friends keep me going. /Felix W

Achieving work-life balance in healthcare requires deliberate planning and the willingness to adjust priorities. /Karen Koziol

I depend on God to take care of me. /Sandra Massey

Good evening, To maintain a work-life balance as a busy Nurse Practitioner, while at work, I focus my attention on the job, discourage work-related calls when not on call, and document during business hours. When off work, I focus on caring for my family and myself, including time to enjoy and connect with those I care about most. You can only care for others when you care for yourself. /Chiquita Houston-Armstrong, NP

First, you can take good care of yourself spiritually and physically. Be positive always. Pay attention. /Philomena Augustin

I prepare and freeze meals in advance for about a month’s worth. In the morning, I take my lunch or dinner out and leave it in the fridge. I buy fresh fruits, cut them, and place them in quart-size freezer bags. For breakfast, I sometimes have a smoothie with one scoop of protein powder and one scoop of collagen powder; other times, I have oatmeal or Farina. I walk very fast on purpose at work, and if I can take a break, I run up and down several flights of stairs. On my day off, I will take long walks and drive to clear my mind, or I will drive two hours to visit my sister and return home on the same day. I also see a nutritionist regularly. This is how I maintain a balanced work-life. /Chantale Gaston

Going for long walks in nature. /Esther Nakamya

For those who forgot, we are running a $50 gift card giveaway for everyone who submits responses to the #everytypeofnurse column! Drumroll… and the winner of our $50 gift card is Chiquita Houston-Armstrong! Congratulations, Chiquita! We hope this gift card helps you find something extraordinary to support your work-life balance.

Keep an eye out for our next question in October – we can’t wait to hear from you!

Why Use a Staffing Agency?

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The hiring process can be a toughie for businesses in every industry. However, with the dire nature of healthcare staffing, where we need nurses and allied pros to fuel passionate patient care, there’s no time to wait. Hospitals also need the right people with the skills, hearts, brains, and experience. That is a whole lot to deal with when we talk of medical facilities providing the care our communities rely upon. This is where healthcare staffing agencies step in to provide relief to qualified candidates in the nick of time so hospitals can focus on what they do best.

Advantages of Using a Staffing Agency:

Do away with work overload

Temporary healthcare workers from staffing agencies can help alleviate the workload of permanent staff, potentially improving efficiency in healthcare facilities. For instance, if a nurse at a hospital is on extended leave, the hospital can enlist a staffing agency to find a qualified healthcare professional who can step in and assist until the nurse returns.

Save time and resources

Healthcare staffing agencies can streamline the hiring process by assessing job candidates on your behalf. Instead of dedicating weeks to reviewing resumes from numerous candidates, you can select an employee from a select group of healthcare professionals recommended by the staffing agency. Suppose your healthcare organization has limited training resources. Staffing recruiters can identify candidates with the specific medical skills required for the job, thus saving you time typically spent managing the entire recruitment process and internal onboarding.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_btn title=”Get Top Healthcare Talent Now” shape=”round” color=”danger” link=”url:mailto%3ARaron%40whiteglovecare.net|||”][vc_column_text]Bringing cost down

When it comes to healthcare staffing, hiring temporary associates through staffing agencies may be more cost-effective than hiring permanent employees in-house. As a human resources manager, this approach can help save on expenses related to benefits packages and payroll taxes for contractual employees. Additionally, staffing agencies often assist temporary employees in finding new opportunities after their assignment ends, potentially reducing the costs associated with unemployment claims.

Evaluate before commitment

With temporary staff, you can assess their job performance before offering them a contract renewal. You can monitor how quickly they adapt to the work environment and observe how well they respond to unexpected situations.

Expand the search for qualified candidates

Staffing agencies can connect you with a broader pool of qualified candidates, giving you access to professionals with diverse skills and experiences.

Tips to get the best placement

Work with an agency that can fill your needs

Work with a staffing agency that understands your specific medical needs. While many staffing agencies specialize in healthcare, it’s important to find one that aligns with your core values and can provide high-quality candidates. White Glove stands out in the medical staffing industry due to our personalized approach and comprehensive support in fulfilling your staffing requirements.

Specify the job requirements

Clearly outlining the qualifications and skills you require for a particular position can help the staffing agency identify the most suitable candidates for your healthcare facility. For instance, if you’re looking to fill a nursing position, it’s beneficial to specify the need for experience in a specialized area, such as critical care or pediatrics, rather than just general nursing skills. This specificity can assist the staffing agency in crafting accurate job descriptions and identifying candidates with the right expertise.

Provide feedback

Offering feedback to the staffing agency regarding the performance of the candidates they place can enhance their recruitment process and ultimately benefit your medical facility. By sharing insights into the success or challenges of the hired staff, you can contribute to the refinement of their selection process. This feedback loop can help the agency better understand your organization’s unique needs and improve the quality of candidates they recommend in the future.

Predicting how AI will affect the future of nursing

Can you imagine patients being greeted by a bot figure asking, “Good Morning, How can you rate your pain level today on a scale from 1-10?” While we aren’t there any time soon, the healthcare industry is undergoing constant evolution, and one of the most notable recent advancements is the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) into nursing and patient care. Given the rapid integration of AI into our lives, it’s hard to predict where it’s headed. Just as 20th-century science fiction failed to anticipate the impact of the internet, data, and social media on our lives, AI’s influence on leisure and professional domains remains unpredictable. Many nurses ponder how AI will impact their careers and if the demand for humans in healthcare will paraglide as AI is incorporated into healthcare. While we can speculate about the future of AI in nursing care and how AI is changing the healthcare landscape, we dedicated this blog to evaluate and assess the foreseeable relationship between new technologies and nursing.

How artificial technology works

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology’s functioning involves emulating human cognitive processes using computer systems. These systems are engineered to execute tasks that traditionally necessitate human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and language translation. AI technologies rely on sophisticated algorithms and extensive datasets to learn from and make predictions or decisions. To understand, AI technologies are as great as they are trained; they work as well as the data they are being fed.

Changing the Role of Nurses with AI

“Tasks for technology, care is for caregivers” is the new motto used by facilities in healthcare staffing. Nurses are likely to see changes in their daily routines as AI becomes an integral part of healthcare delivery. For example, AI-powered tools can automate administrative tasks such as documentation and scheduling, allowing nurses to allocate more time to direct patient care.

AI’s Impact on Patient Care

The integration of AI in hospitals and facilities is expected to improve patient outcomes and safety. AI-powered patient monitoring systems can analyze data from various sources, such as electronic health records and wearable sensors, to identify potential complications and alert nurses to changes in vital signs. This technology can potentially enhance patient safety and enable nurses to intervene promptly in case of adverse events. Even more so, AI can assist in clinical decision-making by providing evidence-based insights. Well-trained AI models can analyze patient data and provide valuable insights, leading to earlier detection of health issues, more accurate diagnosis, and more personalized care plans.

What will remain the same

While AI is sure to transform nursing, certain aspects of the profession will remain unchanged. The compassionate and empathetic nature of nursing can never be replaced by robots, never. Nurses play a vital role in providing emotional support and building trust with patients, and this human touch will continue to be the foundation of nursing care.

The downsides of an AI-dominated healthcare

With all due respect to new technology, AI has its limitations in understanding complex ethical and empathetic considerations. The critical-thinking skills and clinical judgment of nurses are irreplaceable. Even as technologies will advance, we can’t rely on healthcare to become robotic and utterly dependent on technologies altogether. We need attentive human beings with a caring heart to see, hear, and make intuitive judgments on each situation separately.

The Future of Nursing with AI

As AI continues to advance, nurses will need to adapt to new technologies and acquire the necessary skills to effectively work with the new tools that will come into use. However, for those nurses worrying about the future of their profession, let’s recognize that while AI can enhance certain aspects of nursing, it will complement rather than replace the expertise and compassion of nurses.

We’re all about people

No matter where technology is going, take our word that White Glove will do everything to maintain our personal touch, fantastic communication, and individualized approach. We’re simplifying the process and making your job search speedy, swift, and easy, but you’ve got the back of our great team of awesome humans doing everything to help you succeed.
