Note: In case you are rejected, no need to cry! We have many more opportunities for both short travel contracts and homecare.

Can I bring my spouse and children too?

Spouses and children of Canadian nurses living in the U.S. can obtain TD-dependent status, which authorizes them to live and study in the U.S. However, TD dependents are not eligible for work authorization.

Getting your Visa Screen

Once you are set on a job, you’ll need to apply for a VisaScreen through the appropriate channels. We will guide you through this process to ensure you submit everything correctly.

Documents Needed for Visa Screening:

  • – Secondary school diploma or certificate
  • – Validations of all nursing licenses and diplomas
  • – Proof of passing the CGFNS Qualifying Exam® or the NCLEX-RN®
  • – Complete academic records from all nursing programs attended
  • – A passport-style photo in JPEG format
  • – Evidence of English proficiency through an accepted exam or an exemption due to English-based professional education

Once you have all these documents ready, you can go onto the CGFNS website and complete the application process.

Coming to New York

Once accepted, you’ll receive a job offer letter that will help you secure your TN visa.

How to obtain a TN Visa

Canadian citizens have two options for applying for TN work authorization:

Application at a Port of Entry

An application can be submitted directly at a Port of Entry along the United States-Canada border, including specific Canadian airports that offer U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). A CBP officer will review the TN work visa application in person and will either approve or deny it. If approved, the CBP officer will issue a paper I-94 Arrival/Departure Record, which serves as the official documentation of the Canadian nurse’s TN status.

Application with USCIS(Fees will apply)

Alternatively, an application can be submitted to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) at the Vermont Service Center. A USCIS officer will review the TN work visa application and either approve or deny it. If approved, USCIS will issue an approval notice, which the Canadian nurse must present to a CBP officer at a U.S. Port of Entry to gain admission to the U.S. under TN work visa status. The CBP officer will then issue a paper I-94 Arrival/Departure Record, confirming the nurse’s official TN status.

Note: Unlike Mexican citizens, Canadian citizens do not need to obtain a TN visa stamp in their passport from a U.S. Consulate.

Required documents for crossing the U.S. border include:

  • – Diploma and transcripts
  • – Passport
  • – Proof of Canadian citizenship
  • – New York nursing license
  • – Visa screen documentation
  • – Job offer letter (provided by us)

Essential Tips to Attract Top Talent

Tips for Hospital Staffing Managers and MSPs to Attract Top Talent

In the healthcare sector, retaining top talent is a critical concern for staffing managers. Good nurses and well-trained staff mean a hospital is running smoothly and effectively. By implementing practical hiring techniques, healthcare facilities can position themselves as employers of choice. Here’s a structured guide to addressing retention challenges in a meaningful way.

Partner with the Right Staffing Agency(ies)

Outsourcing recruitment through an agency is an effective way to access a broader range of top candidates. It is important to choose an agency that understands the specific needs of your facility, whether you require nurses, technicians, or administrative staff; it’s even better if they can provide all these services under one roof. Conduct thorough research to ensure you make an informed decision regarding your partnership.

Pro tip: Many staffing agencies advertise that they hire for healthcare roles, but their primary specialty may lie in a different field.

Stay Current with Market Trends

The healthcare landscape is ever-evolving, particularly regarding compensation and benefits. Staying informed about market trends allows staffing managers to remain competitive. We recommend regularly reviewing rates and overtime policies to remain an employer of choice.

Be Transparent with the Staffing Agency

Small stuff matters a great deal. We encourage you to share the requirements, big and small, that are important to you; it helps us match candidates to your facility that align with your goals and vision.

Plan for an Effective Interview

When preparing for an interview, it’s a great idea to compile a list of questions that truly matter to you. Consider the skills and experiences that are essential for the role you’re hiring for. Phrase the questions in a way that doesn’t lead to specific answers but is broad enough to encourage the candidate to offer transparent responses.

For example, ask: “How long have you been working in the ICU?”

Avoid asking: “Do you have 3 years of experience in the ICU? That’s our minimum requirement.”

Communicate Your Expectations to the Candidate

Clearly define the facility’s expectations alongside the facility’s mission and values. This helps prospective hires understand the organization’s culture. For example, if it is expected that a travel nurse may need to fill in for a different floor or unit on a quiet day, ensure this is communicated effectively to avoid any misunderstandings later.

Focus on Retaining Contract Nurses

Retaining quality nurses and healthcare professionals helps ensure that the floor operates effectively. Since they are already trained in your system and know what’s expected of them, they can perform better and be a great asset to the team. Keep in mind that many nurses begin looking for their next contract 2 to 4 weeks after their start date. The sooner you can extend a renewal offer to them, the more likely they will accept it.

So Cliche but True: Teamwork is dreamwork

Maintaining clear lines of communication with your staffing agency is vital for improving the hiring process and the quality of candidates. Sharing insights and experiences reduces the risk of misunderstandings that can lead to mismatches in staffing. Whether you provide positive feedback when you are satisfied or explain the reasons for rejecting candidates, this communication helps plan for better future outcomes.

Travel nursing Canada: How Canadian nurses go for US opportunities

For many nurses researching travel nursing Canada options, the idea of working in the United States often comes up as a natural next step. U.S. travel nursing offers Canadian nurses the opportunity to gain diverse clinical experience, explore new regions, and work short-term assignments across the country.

While U.S. travel nursing is not a direct-entry pathway, Canadian nurses who meet U.S. licensing and immigration requirements may qualify to work as travel nurses throughout the United States. This guide explains how the process works and what’s required.

Why Canadian Nurses Choose to Travel Nurse in the U.S.

Many travel nurses Canada start their careers with regional or provincial assignments before looking south for broader opportunities. Compared to Canadian-based travel roles, U.S. travel nursing offers nationwide mobility, shorter contracts, and access to a wide range of healthcare systems and specialties.

For nurses interested in expanding their scope of practice and experiencing different clinical environments, U.S. travel nursing can be a strategic career move.

Who Is Eligible to Travel Nurse in the U.S.?

Canadian nurses may be eligible to work in the U.S. only if they already meet American regulatory requirements.

To qualify, you must have:

  • Canadian citizenship
  • An active U.S. state nursing license
  • VisaScreen® certification
  • At least two years of recent experience in your specialty

It’s important to note that canadian travel nursing experience alone does not automatically qualify a nurse to work in the U.S. Licensure and credentialing must be completed separately.

U.S. Nursing Licensure for Canadian Nurses

Unlike a Canada travel nurse role, which is typically governed by provincial systems, U.S. travel nursing requires licensure at the state level. Each U.S. state board of nursing has its own application process, timelines, and fees.

Licensure generally involves credential evaluation, proof of education, and completion of required exams where applicable.

VisaScreen® Certification

VisaScreen® is required for Canadian nurses working in the U.S. and verifies that education, licensure, and English proficiency meet American standards. This step is mandatory regardless of specialty or assignment location.

Documents needed for Visa Screen typically include:

  • Nursing diploma & transcripts
  • Validation of all licenses
  • NCLEX-RN® or CGFNS exam results
  • Proof of English proficiency (if required)
  • Passport-style photo

VisaScreen information and fees are available through CGFNS.

TN Status for Canadian Nurses

Canadian citizens may apply for TN work authorization, which allows eligible professionals to work in the U.S.

Important notes:

  • Canadians do not need a visa stamp
  • TN status is typically obtained at a U.S. Port of Entry
  • A valid job offer letter is required

Experience Requirements for Travel Nursing

Most U.S. travel nursing assignments require:

  • A minimum of two years of recent specialty experience
  • Experience aligned with the unit or setting
  • Ability to meet facility-specific standards

These requirements often differ from travel nurse jobs Canada, which may be longer-term or structured differently.

Travel Nurse Pay: Canada vs. the United States

When comparing travel nurse salary Canada figures to U.S. travel nursing compensation, many nurses notice meaningful differences. U.S. travel nursing pay often reflects higher demand, contract-based structures, and stipend models, though costs, taxes, and requirements vary by state.

Understanding these differences helps nurses make informed decisions before pursuing U.S. assignments.

How Long Are U.S. Travel Nursing Contracts?

Most U.S. travel nursing contracts are approximately 13 weeks, with options to extend or move to a new location. This short-term structure is one of the key differences compared to many Canadian travel nursing roles.

Can Family Members Join You?

Spouses and dependent children may accompany Canadian nurses under TD status, allowing them to live and study in the U.S. while the nurse completes a travel assignment.

Finding the Right Travel Nursing Opportunities

Once you hold a U.S. nursing license and VisaScreen® certification, you can begin applying for travel nursing positions across the United States! White Glove Placement helps Canadian nurses explore travel nursing opportunities nationwide, guiding you through job selection, credentialing, and the transition into each assignment.
